Reliant is an energy company originating in Texas but also serving DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and Illinois. The company has standard and renewable plans available, including a wind power plan. It also has a special program called EcoShare that can be ‘tacked on’ to any standard plan.
About the Company
Reliant got its start in Houston, offering customers a flat $3 monthly rate in ‘so they could have a light at night.’ The company is still biggest in Houston and Texas. It’s now owned by NRG, which is a larger and more expansive company.
Reliant prides itself on Energy Assistance programs which are designed to bring electricity to places where it’s needed. The most notable of these is an account that helps low-income families to pay electricity deposits. Reliant also helps some families to increase the energy efficiency of their homes.
The company is responsible for naming Reliant Park, Reliant Astrodome, Reliant Stadium, Reliant Arena, and Reliant Center in Houston.
Green Electricity for Households
Reliant allows consumers the option to pay a slightly higher rate in order to buy wind-generated energy. They can choose (not necessarily at the same price) between a fully wind-powered plan and a plan that uses 20% wind power.
The company also offers a set of options called EcoShare, which are an all-purpose gesture towards environmental friendliness. Buying EcoShare means purchasing a quantity of carbon offsets, possibly for the company’s benefit, as well as redirecting some money towards an environmental charity. Both the ‘Gold’ and ‘Silver’ options for this plan are flat monthly fees that can be canceled at any time.
