The Greenest Countries in the World are Revealed
Using data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, it has been revealed which countries are producing the most electricity from renewable resources.
But before you get to thinking China and the United States are pioneers in clean energy; remember that the chart above refers to total electricity generated from renewables, meaning on a global scale these countries produce the most clean electricity. To get a better sense of which country is actually the greenest, we have to look at the numbers relative to total electricity consumption in each country.
It’s now clear that while China and United States are top producers of electricity from renewable resources, the amount they are generating is nowhere near the amount of electricity being consumed by their populations. China only generates 19 percent of the total electricity it consumes from renewables and the United States generates 13 percent.
In fact, only one out of the 10 countries produces enough electricity from renewables to meet its demand for electricity: Norway. Norway generates more energy from renewables than the country actually consumes. Brazil takes a close second by generating 96 percent of its electricity needs from renewable sources. The Canadian electricity market comes in this as it generates by 72 percent of its electric needs through renewables.
