California home solar market grows 80 percent
Sunrun, the largest solar company in the U.S., and PV Solar Report recently issued an updated list of the cities with the largest solar growth in California so far in 2012.
The solar installations are measured in areas with a median income, as opposed to only the most affluent cities in the state.
"This list shows undeniable solar growth in a diverse range of cities, debunking the common misconception that solar is only for the wealthy," said Stephen Torres, founder and managing director of PV Solar Report. "Key to this diversification is third-party-owned solar, which makes solar affordable for a wider range of homeowners."
The top five cities, beginning with the most solar installations, were Santa Clarita, Castaic, Palmdale, Clovis and Pleasanton. The report notes that solar installations are still surging ahead in cities that have long been associated with clean energy, such as Fresno and Bakersfield, but cities like Santa Clarita are quickly catching up.
According to the latest report from the Solar Energy Industries Association, California recently lost its position as the top state for solar energy, with New Jersey overtaking it to be number one.
