Renewable electricity is easier than people imagine
Many people are intimidated by the idea of trying to support renewable electricity, since most people in the news seem to only talk about how expensive it generally is. But Megan Williams of The Green Divas writes for the DailyRecord.com that there are actually several options for people interested in green energy that aren't nearly as complicated as some make it out to be.
The simplest is for a person to just to talk to their utility company and see if it offers any options to pay a slightly higher rate to increase the amount of renewable electricity they receive.
While that option can raise electricity bills a bit, there are also renewable electricity providers in states that make use of electricity deregulation that offer plans specifically designed around renewable energy. These companies, since they are competitive unlike the utility companies, sometimes can have lower electricity rates and more renewable electricity.
Finally, individuals and businesses alike can purchase renewable energy certificates, which represent the production of 1 megawatt-hour of renewable electricity. This is simply a means of offering support for the people who actually do add solar power installations or build wind plants. However, each of the other two plans ultimately are not really providing people directly with green energy, since electricity is put into the grid and it merges with all that produced by other power plants as well.
