A new retail electricity provider hopes to give customers another opportunity to support renewable electricity while saving money.

GigaOm reports that Ethical Electric, based out of Silver Spring, Maryland, intends to launch later this year, offering renewable electricity plans for customers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

This company noted the success of renewable electricity providers like Green Mountain Energy, which only supplies electricity in Texas, New York and Oregon, and hoped to bring this success to other states with electricity deregulation.

GigaOm notes that many utility companies and other electricity suppliers offer renewable electricity only with a hefty surcharge, making many customers less likely to opt for that. Instead, Ethical Electric plans to offer renewable electricity as a matter of course, providing 100 percent clean energy from wind and solar power installations. The company will begin offering electricity rates this summer.

Green Mountain Energy suggests that electricity deregulation has played a crucial role in bringing renewable electricity into the mainstream in Texas, letting electricity providers push for technologies like wind power. Over the past 10 years, Texas has emerged as the country's leader in wind power by a wide margin.
